Convert Those Old Chat Logs!

Do you find yourself in a similar situation as this?

Its the awesome new clients Digsby and Trillian. It looks so cool with so many features. Oh no! I have used AIM for years. What will I do with all these precious chat logs. I don’t want to lose them but I don’t want to discontinue them either!

Never fear! A Digsby user has created a new program that is here to solve your problems!

Chat Log Converter +
Windows only
Registration required

It does what it says. Converts chat logs. I have successfully used the program to convert my old AIM logs (a client that personally, I will never use again) to Digsby. Now why can’t we just move the logs to a new folder? Thats because clients like Trillian and Digsby organize the logs into separate dated files. AIM and other clients like AIM use a complete archive in one single file. Chat Log Converter + splits them for you.

Convert to: AIM, AIMLite, aMSN, Digsby, Pidgin/Gaim, MSN/Windows Live, Trillian
Convert from: AIM, AIMLite, aMSN, Digsby, ICQ, Pidgin/Gaim, Miranda, MSN/Windows Live, Skype, Trillian, Yahoo

There may be a few conversion bugs here and there but other than that, it works like a charm. If you choose to use the .exe version, it makes a backup in the install directory which is usually in C:\Program Files therefore may or may not require administrative privileges.

Because this is probably going to be one time use software, the developer requires you to register before you can download. It only takes a few minutes to do so. If you have any questions, ask him at the site. He has a Digsby widget live chat just like our blog. Great support. I contacted him once about an issue causing the logs to fail to convert and he quickly worked on a fix that came out a week later.

Update 2/14/10: The developer has just informed me that registration is no longer required. Enjoy the program!

  1. Problem with this chat converter program is if you notice a log file will be created on your desktop and if you opent hat log file and look at it the very first line of the prgogram execution says it's emailing a copy of the logs to the chat converter program creator. To me that's an invasion of privacy and all kinds of data that's meant to be private could fall into bad hands. It's sneaky and I doubt most know it's even there, but beware. I'm currently looking for a new log converter program, but have not had any luck yet at all.

  2. So I've been using this program for a while and I really like it, but for a couple weeks now it has not been working and says I need an updated version of the program. It then opens my browser and takes me to the program website but the page says "This website you were trying to reach is temporarily unavailable. Please check back soon. If you are the owner of this website, please contact technical support as soon as possible."
Is there anyway to contact the program developer and let him know his site is down and that users would like it back up again to continue to use his program?

  3. I've been using this program for quite a while now and i really like it! However it has been down for about two weeks now. Is there anyway to contact the developer and ask him to getthe site back up and running so that the program will work again? It says the program is out of date when it launches and tries to access the website to update it but then it can't and it won't run without being able to access the site and the site is down. I really like this program and I haven't been able to find anything else like it out there to use alternatively. I really hope it will come back up soon!

Agreed. This program is amazing and I can't find any mirrors except an older version (2.0) here:

    http://forum.digsby.com/viewtopic.php?pid=35309
    http://derkaot.bplaced.net/ChatLogConverter_Setup.exe

But it improved a lot from versions 2 to 3 and was constantly updated.

  5. I got this email from the developer:

    Hi,

Sorry to get back to you so late. The software/source code and site were sold to Dexrex.com . Try emailing them to find out about any future releases or if the site will go back up. I'm glad the software worked for you and sorry it's not anymore.

    Ryan

I don't know if the old version (2.0) works, but I know Version 3 wants to constantly update, and as the original site isn't around any more, it refuses to run.

  7. CHAT LOG CONVERTER INFORMATION:

    The Bad News:
Chat Log Converter+ looks like it's gone downhill. I'm doubting that it'll ever be back.

    The Good News:
Deltik has made a top-priority project called Log2Log Chat Log Converter. You guessed it.
Log2Log is cross-platform: It officially supports Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.
Log2Log is open-source: Unlike Chat Log Converter+, you can actually see that Log2Log does not steal your private chat logs.

    Some More Bad News:
Log2Log was intended to be released at the end of August 2011. The development team has underestimated how much work it would take to create it.

    Some More Good News:
Don't let that get you down. Log2Log is still in active development.

Want to speed things up? Help develop Log2Log ! Contact me at deltik@gmx.com for more information, whether you just want to know how development is going or you want to help.

  9. The Log2Log is up and running but sadly has been suspended due to "lack of interest" which imo, is clearly untrue! version 1.x does run but only converts to 4 types: pidgin, log2log JSON, omegle and trillan. It converts FROM several messengers. Sadly it does not convert to msn format which is what I personally need. But for those who can use those 4 formats you can download it at either of the following sites:

    http://log2log.sourceforge.net/
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/Other-Chat-Tools/Log2Log.shtml

Sadly, as indicated by the remarks on the author's website in the left hand column on the main page (in the first link), he seems to have little interest in pursuing the project as he is under the mistaken assumption that there is not enough interest in this project. He does say however that he "may" update the program if requested for specific features or bug are reported. So, we want a log program we all need to email him to indicate that YES there IS in fact an interest in this project being seen through to the end. I have sent an email myself already with the request for conversion TO msn format.

    2. You did indeed! Guys, Deltik has been simply Amazing! He replied to my email right away and since then has released several patches to the program.I emailed him when I found a few bugs and he fixed them with a new release pretty much over night!

Log2Log now has support for Pidgin (both html and txt) log conversion to msn's xml format. The only problem with Pidgin text log conversion is that because it is plain text there is no information to be displayed in the "to" field upon conversion, but for me, that's not an issue,I can work with that because I know who sent it, I know who received it which works fine for me and can easily be worked around by other users.

I have to say he has been a pleasure to work with, is really nice individual and all around wonderful human being for putting up with me for all the little bugs I found along the way. Hubby and I have donated a small amount for his efforts with our gratitude. If there is anything you want from the program, I am sure he will work with you!

Please donate to the project guys, it really is worth it as Deltik is a hard working guy and has done alot for his programs users!

The current version of Log2Log (v1.0.7) can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/log2log/
